Within remote betting, football generated £1.2 billion and horse racing £769.3 million of GGY in 2025-26. The fall in betting yield, against growth in casino, is the main shift between the two years: remote casino rose by about £700 million while remote betting fell by about £200 million, on the rounded figures.

The faster operator dataset

Alongside the official statistics, the Commission publishes quarterly market data collected directly from a group of the largest online operators. It arrives sooner but is a different dataset: it may include free bets and bonuses, and the Commission says it should not be compared with Industry Statistics. Average monthly active accounts also double-count customers who use more than one product.

What GGY measures

The Commission defines gross gambling yield as stakes paid to the operator, plus other income from licensed gambling, minus prizes and winnings paid out. Free bets and bonuses count only when the customer could have taken cash instead. In plain terms, it is what operators keep from customers before costs and tax. For the National Lottery and other lotteries, the statistics use an equivalent figure: ticket sales minus prizes. Our guide to GGY, GGR, handle and NGR shows how this compares with the measures used in North America.

Changes that affect the 2026 figures

Several rule changes fall inside or just before the period. Online slots stake limits took effect on 9 April 2025 (£5 per spin for adults aged 25 and over) and 21 May 2025 (£2 for 18 to 24 year olds). Bonus wagering requirements were capped at 10 times from 19 January 2026. From April 2026, Remote Gaming Duty rose from 21% to 40%, which affects operators' costs rather than GGY itself; the duty changes are set out in our UK remote gambling duty page.
